Te mapa
Yigai'erqi lies in the Kashgar area of southern Xinjiang, on the western edge of the Tarim Basin. This is oasis country. Farming depends on water carried from the mountain rivers through a network of canals, and the settlement pattern follows that water. On a map the town appears within a wide, finely divided agricultural landscape.
From above, the landscape is strongly geometric. Straight roads and irrigation channels divide the land into long rectangular fields, and villages sit along the roads at regular intervals. In reality many of these roads are lined with poplar trees, and on the map they read as clean, parallel strokes.
To the east lie the sands of the Taklamakan Desert, and to the south and west the ground rises toward the Kunlun and Pamir mountains. A Yigai'erqi map poster shows the irrigated oasis grid that makes life possible in this dry region.
Irrigation channels run through the farmland in long lines and branches. They are the reason the oasis exists and the organising structure of the whole map.
Roads and canals divide the land into long rectangular plots. The result is a strongly regular texture across the poster, unlike the organic layout of most towns.
Houses and village streets line up along the main roads. They create thin bands of denser detail that run through the open fields of the oasis.

Koteā ko Yigai'erqi
The oasis grid of southern Xinjiang is unlike anywhere else, and it makes a striking abstract drawing. A map of Yigai'erqi suits people from the Kashgar area, as well as anyone drawn to the landscapes of the Silk Road.
Personalise the title and subtitle, in Uyghur script, Chinese or Latin letters, and edit the coordinates. Then pick Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand echoes the desert edge beautifully.
