Te mapa
Yolöten lies in Mary province in southern Turkmenistan, in the Murghab River oasis that has supported settlement in this dry region for thousands of years. From above, the town is a compact block of streets surrounded by a patchwork of irrigated fields, canals and ditches, with open desert beyond the cultivated land.
The street network is mostly straight and regular, typical of towns planned or rebuilt in the Soviet period, with a clear main road and residential quarters on both sides. The river and irrigation channels add softer lines to the plan, cutting diagonally across the rectangular field pattern.
A Yolöten map poster shows how precise the boundary between farmed land and desert can be. The town gives its name to the gas field discovered nearby, first known as South Yolotan and now called Galkynysh, which ranks among the largest natural gas fields in the world.
The river that feeds the whole Mary oasis runs near the town, a winding line through an otherwise rigidly geometric agricultural landscape.
Canals and field boundaries surround the streets in a dense rectangular pattern, which reads on the map almost like a second, finer street grid.
Straight roads and regular residential blocks form the town itself, a compact, ordered core set in the middle of the cultivated land.
