Yuba City lies on the flat floor of California's Sacramento Valley, on the west bank of the Feather River. Directly across the water is Marysville, and the two are joined by bridges, so the map shows twin towns split by a single river channel. Levees follow the riverbank, a reminder of how much this landscape is shaped by floodwater.
Away from the river, the city spreads out in a broad, mostly orthogonal grid. Long arterial roads cross it at regular intervals, and at the edges the streets give way to orchards. Peaches, prunes and walnuts are grown widely in Sutter County, and their tree rows show up as a fine texture of parallel lines.
To the northwest, the Sutter Buttes interrupt the flat valley, a compact ring of volcanic peaks often called the smallest mountain range in the world. Yuba City also has one of the largest Punjabi Sikh communities in the United States, and its annual Sikh parade draws visitors from far away.
