Te mapa
Yuli, also known as Lopnur County, is in the Bayingolin prefecture of Xinjiang, on the northeastern side of the Tarim Basin. The town is a compact grid of wide streets and irrigated blocks. Outside it, the map quickly turns to farmland, scattered river channels and then open desert as the land runs south toward the Taklamakan.
The county takes in a huge area that reaches toward the dry basin of Lop Nur. It includes the ruins of Loulan, the ancient oasis kingdom on the Silk Road. Closer to the town, the Tarim River and its channels support forests of desert poplar, a tree well adapted to salt and drought. These forests are a landmark of the region.
A Yuli map poster shows an oasis town at the edge of great emptiness. The street grid is clean and planned. Irrigation lines and fields spread out from it for a short way, and beyond them the land has hardly any lines at all. On paper the contrast between a busy centre and empty surroundings is striking.
Yuli's centre is laid out as a regular grid of broad avenues and large blocks, typical of county towns planned or rebuilt in modern Xinjiang.
The rivers of the northern Tarim Basin cross the county in winding, branching channels. On the map they are thin, irregular lines crossing otherwise empty ground.
South of the farmland, streets and fields fade into open desert. This gives the poster a strong, quiet empty space around the town.

Koteā ko Yuli
Yuli is a place of long distances, oases and old Silk Road history. A map poster suits someone connected to the town, and also travellers drawn to the Tarim Basin and Lop Nur. Its spare composition fits well in a minimal interior.
