Te mapa
Zagazig is the capital of Sharqia Governorate, in the eastern Nile Delta, and its map is shaped by water and rail rather than hills or coastlines. Irrigation canals run through and around the city, and the flat surrounding land is divided into the small, regular fields typical of the Delta. Railway lines meet here too, and their long straight tracks cut across the streets at confident angles.
The modern city grew in the nineteenth century as a centre of the cotton trade, and it later became home to Zagazig University, one of the larger universities in Egypt. Its streets are dense in the centre, with markets and older quarters close to the canals, and they open out toward newer districts and the fields on every side.
Just outside the city lies Tell Basta, the site of ancient Bubastis, a major cult centre of the cat goddess Bastet. On a Zagazig map poster the archaeological site appears as a quiet open area beside the city, one of the few places where the dense modern grid gives way to something far older.
Canals pass through the city and across the surrounding land, their gently curving lines forming the main natural structure of the map in an otherwise flat landscape.
Several railway lines converge on Zagazig, and their straight tracks slice through the street pattern, linking the city to Cairo, the Suez Canal cities and the rest of the Delta.
The ruins of ancient Bubastis, sacred to the goddess Bastet, form an open archaeological area at the edge of the city, a clear gap in the dense surrounding streets.

Koteā ko Zagazig
For graduates of Zagazig University and families from Sharqia, the map is a reminder of a very particular landscape: canals, railway lines and fields pressed close to the city. It also makes a thoughtful gift for anyone interested in Egyptian history.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with a year of graduation or a family name. The five styles include Classic black & white, Noir and Blueprint as well as the warmer Sand and Paper. Print it yourself from the 300 DPI files or order a framed print.
