Archena sits on the Segura river in the Region of Murcia, at the southern entrance to the Ricote valley. From above, the contrast is striking: a narrow ribbon of irrigated orchards follows the river, while the land beyond turns quickly to dry, bare hills. The town's streets fill the space between the two, running down toward the water in a close, irregular pattern.
Archena is best known for its thermal springs. The Balneario de Archena, a spa complex beside the river, has drawn visitors to its warm mineral waters since Roman times, and the town has grown with that tradition. Citrus and fruit orchards on the valley floor remain part of the local landscape.
