Balaguer Map Poster & Print
Balaguer is the capital of the Noguera comarca in the province of Lleida, set on the River Segre where the plain of the Lleida region meets the first hills of the Pre-Pyrenees. From above, the river is the organising line. The historic town stretches along its right bank, pressed between the water and a ridge that rises steeply behind the houses.
On that ridge stand the remains of the Castell Formós, and the medieval streets below run mostly parallel to the Segre, stacked in narrow bands. Across the river, newer districts spread out on flatter land in a more regular pattern. Bridges stitch the two halves together, and the contrast between them is the central feature of a Balaguer map poster.
Balaguer was the seat of the Counts of Urgell, and its castle was their stronghold until the fifteenth century. The town is also known for the Sanctuary of Sant Crist, which overlooks the river from the heights. Today it is a regional centre for the irrigated farmland around it, with orchards and fields surrounding the urban area.
