Bīrjand Map Poster & Print
Bīrjand is the capital of South Khorasan Province in eastern Iran. It sits on an arid high plain, with bare mountains rising to the south. On a map the city stretches mainly east to west along the valley floor, and its newer districts extend in regular blocks away from the older centre.
The historic core has a looser, more irregular street pattern. The Birjand citadel, a restored fortress, stands on a small rise near the old town. Seasonal watercourses cross the plain, dry for much of the year, and their beds show up as open strips between built-up areas. The city is known for saffron, barberries and handwoven carpets from the surrounding region.
