Būndi sits in a fold of the Aravalli hills in southeastern Rajasthan. The map shows a town squeezed into a valley. The old city is a dense tangle of lanes at the foot of a steep ridge. On the ridge above stands Taragarh Fort, its walls running along the crest. The Garh Palace sits on the slope below, between the fort and the town.
Būndi is known for its palace murals in the Bundi school of painting and for its stepwells, including Raniji ki Baori. Nawal Sagar, a small artificial lake, lies near the old city, and blue-washed houses give the older quarters their colour. Rudyard Kipling stayed here and wrote about the palace.
A Būndi map poster draws the whole relationship between town and hill. In black and white, the fort walls trace the ridge, the lake sits as a clean shape at the edge of the old quarter, and the lanes below form a fine, almost woven texture.
