Congleton lies in east Cheshire, where the Cheshire plain begins to rise toward the Peak District. On a map, the town centre sits around a bend in the River Dane, a compact grid of older streets surrounded by later housing that spreads up the valley sides, with parks and open land following the river corridor.
East of the centre, the Macclesfield Canal traces a smooth contour-hugging line, and the railway runs along the high ground nearby.
