Correntina lies in the far west of Bahia, in the cerrado, the vast savanna of central Brazil. The town is on a river that belongs to the basin of the São Francisco, and on the map the water is its defining line. The streets gather close to the river and spread out from the banks in a loose, irregular grid.
The region is known for its springs and clear rivers, which feed from the plateau to the west and flow across the cerrado. In recent decades the high plateau has become large-scale farmland.
