Ghubaysh lies in West Kordofan, in the broad savanna belt of central Sudan. On the map the town is a compact cluster of lanes and compounds with no rigid grid. Its streets follow the practical lines of daily movement. Beyond it, a few tracks head across open land in several directions and link to villages and grazing areas.
The surrounding region is dry for much of the year. Seasonal watercourses appear in the rains and fade in the dry months.
