Kuraymah Map Poster & Print
Kuraymah, often written Karima, lies on the right bank of the Nile in Sudan’s Northern State. It sits in the great bend of the river, where the Nile turns south before swinging north again. From above, the map is defined by sharp contrasts: the broad band of water, a narrow strip of cultivated land along the banks, and open desert beyond.
Just outside town stands Jebel Barkal, a flat-topped sandstone hill that was sacred in ancient Nubia. Together with the surrounding sites of Napata, it is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Royal pyramids at El Kurru and Nuri lie nearby, and the town of Merowe is across the river.
A Kuraymah map poster shows a place where geography and history are closely bound together. The river gives the composition its sweep, and the green margin along it shows how settlement has always clung to the water. The streets of the town sit compactly within that setting, on the edge of one of the oldest cultural landscapes in Africa.
