Liévin Map Poster
Liévin sits next to Lens in the old coal basin of Pas-de-Calais. From above, its streets merge with those of its neighbours into a continuous urban area. Mining shaped the map here. Workers' estates, known as cités minières, form repeating rows of houses in neat blocks, and old railway lines that once carried coal still trace long curves between the neighbourhoods.
The landscape around the town is marked by terrils, the spoil heaps left by the pits, which now rise as green or black cones. The town is also remembered for the 1974 mine disaster at the Saint-Amé pit, one of the last major accidents in the French coalfield. To the west, the land rises toward the ridge of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette and its First World War memorials.

Rail corridors
Old and current rail lines curve between neighbourhoods and link Liévin with Lens and the wider basin. They add long sweeping strokes to the composition.
