Lokeren sits in East Flanders, roughly halfway between Ghent and Antwerp, on the banks of the Durme, a tributary of the Scheldt. From above, the river is the defining line: it curves through the town, and the old centre gathers around the market square close to its banks. Around that core, streets branch out into residential areas, and the E17 motorway draws a firm line to the south.
The Durme valley around Lokeren includes protected wetlands and meadows, which show up on a map as open ground alongside the river. The town has a long history as a market town in the Waasland region, and its street pattern still reflects that: a dense centre, radial roads, and quieter neighbourhoods filling the space between them.
