Madaya lies north of Mandalay, on the flat, fertile plain along the eastern side of the Irrawaddy River. From above, the town is a modest grid of streets surrounded by rice fields, which spread out in small rectangular plots. Irrigation canals and channels cross the landscape in straight lines and give the whole area a structured, almost ruled appearance.
The land here has been farmed intensively for centuries, fed by canal systems that bring water across the dry zone of central Myanmar. On a map these channels are as important as the roads. They divide the plain into parcels, and villages cluster along them. The town acts as the local market and administrative centre for this agricultural area.
