Maḩallāt lies in Markazi Province, at the foot of the mountains that rise between the central plateau and the Zagros. From above the town is long rather than round. Its streets follow the line of the valley, and the built-up area gives way quickly to terraced gardens and then to bare, folded hillsides. The contour of the land decides the form of the town more than any plan does.
The town is known across Iran for two things: its hot mineral springs just outside the centre, and its flower and ornamental plant growers. Greenhouses and nurseries fill much of the land around the houses. On a map they appear as fine, regular rectangles set against the looser weave of residential lanes, like a separate texture laid over the town.
A Maḩallāt map poster brings out that contrast between cultivated ground and open slope.
