Malhada is a town in the southwest of Bahia, on the banks of the São Francisco, the great river that runs through the Brazilian interior. It faces the town of Carinhanha across the water, and on a map the river is the dominant feature, a wide channel dividing the frame, with the streets of Malhada set along one shore.
The landscape around Malhada is typical of the São Francisco valley in this region: a dry climate, open scrub and pasture, and the river as a source of water, fishing and transport. The town is modest in size, with a small grid of streets close to the river and roads that lead inland to farms and neighbouring communities.
