Mexborough Map Poster & Print
Mexborough lies in the borough of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, on the south bank of the River Don. The town grew with coal mining, pottery and the railways, and the map still shows that working past. The river, the canal of the South Yorkshire Navigation and a railway line run in parallel through the valley, forming a band of long lines along the town's edge.
Above the valley floor, terraced streets climb away from the river in close rows, typical of industrial towns in the region. Beyond them, later housing estates spread in curves and loops. Near the river stands the site of Mexborough Castle, the earthworks of a medieval motte-and-bailey castle, one of the town's oldest landmarks.
