Palín lies in the department of Escuintla, on the route that descends from Guatemala City toward the Pacific coast. It is a Poqomam Maya town, and its layout keeps the classic Guatemalan pattern: a central plaza with the church, a grid of streets around it, and neighbourhoods that loosen into farmland and steeper ground at the edges.
The town's best-known feature is the enormous ceiba tree that shades its central square and market, a landmark often pictured in guides to Guatemala. The volcanic landscape of the region is close by, with Pacaya to the east, and the terrain around Palín tilts and folds, so the tidy central grid soon gives way to curving roads.
A Palín map poster shows the orderly blocks of the old centre, the highway that carries traffic to and from the capital, and the irregular lines of the surrounding slopes. It is a small town on the map, but its structure is clear and recognisable, and it reads beautifully in simple black and white.
