Saint Ives Map Poster & Print
Saint Ives lies on the River Great Ouse in Cambridgeshire, about twenty kilometres northwest of Cambridge. For centuries it was an important market town, and its layout still shows that. A long street runs parallel to the river, and the old bridge crosses the water at the centre of town, joining the town to the meadows on the south bank.
The fifteenth-century bridge is the town's best-known landmark. It carries a small chapel in the middle, one of only a few surviving bridge chapels in England. Oliver Cromwell farmed here in the 1630s, and his statue stands in the market area. To the south and east, flooded gravel workings have left a scatter of lakes.
A Saint Ives map poster shows the river curving past the old centre, the narrow crossing at the bridge and the network of lakes and meadows around it. The town's streets are compact, but the water gives the map a varied, almost watery character. That makes it more distinctive than most maps of small English towns.

Wide, low meadows border the river and flood in wet winters. They appear as open spaces that set the town apart from the surrounding farmland.
Gravel-pit lakes
Former gravel workings near the town have filled with water. Their irregular lakes add a cluster of dark shapes to the southeastern part of the print.
