Torre del Mar Map Poster & Print
Torre del Mar is the coastal part of the municipality of Vélez-Málaga, on the eastern stretch of the Málaga coast known as the Axarquía. On a map it is a strip of town laid parallel to the shoreline, a few blocks deep, with a long seafront promenade drawing a single clean line along the edge of the Mediterranean.
Behind the beach, streets form a fairly regular grid, crossed by the main road that follows the coast. The mouth of the Río Vélez lies just to the west, where the river's course breaks the line of buildings. Inland, the land shifts to fields and orchards before climbing toward the hills and the old town of Vélez-Málaga.
The town takes its name from a watchtower that once guarded this coast, and a tall brick chimney from a former sugar mill still stands as a reminder of the sugar cane once grown on the plain.
