Vlissingen occupies the southern tip of Walcheren in Zeeland, facing the broad estuary of the Western Scheldt. Seen from above, the town is defined by water on two scales: a sweeping seafront along the estuary and a set of inner harbours and docks cut into the old town. Ocean-going ships bound for Antwerp pass close to the shore.
The seafront boulevard is the town's most recognisable line, a long curve with the beach below it, and one of the rare Dutch beaches that faces south. Vlissingen is also the birthplace of the admiral Michiel de Ruyter, whose statue looks out over the water. A ferry for pedestrians and cyclists crosses the estuary to Breskens.
A Vlissingen map poster sets the dense old streets against the blank expanse of the Western Scheldt, so the coastline itself becomes the dominant stroke. Harbour basins and dock quays add sharp geometric notches to the shore, while residential districts spread north towards the rest of the island. Basins and quays reach into the old town, creating rectangular cut-outs among the streets. They recall the town's long history as a port and give the centre a distinctive, notched outline.
Western Scheldt
The estuary fills much of the frame as open space. This wide stretch of water carries shipping to Antwerp and separates Walcheren from Zeeland Flanders on the opposite shore.
