Wasquehal sits between Lille, Roubaix and Marcq-en-Barœul in the continuous urban area of northern France. On a map there is almost no gap between it and its neighbours. Streets of terraced houses, former industrial sites, business parks and newer housing run straight across the municipal boundaries, so the town is defined more by its internal features than by any outer edge.
The clearest of those features is the Canal de Roubaix, which crosses the commune and links the Deûle near Lille with waterways toward the Scheldt basin. Its locks and towpaths now serve walkers and cyclists more than barges. On a monochrome print the canal is a strong line, running through a street pattern that grew up with the region's textile industry.
The Grand Boulevard, the tree-lined tram axis between Lille, Roubaix and Tourcoing, runs through this part of the metropolis and adds a long diagonal spine.
