Alès sits where the Cévennes mountains meet the lower plains of the Gard. The river Gardon d'Alès curves around the old town, and on a map the historic centre is clearly held within that bend, with bridges crossing to newer districts on the other bank. To the north and west the hills close in, and the street pattern climbs and thins accordingly.
For much of its modern history, Alès was the capital of a coal mining basin, and traces of that industry remain in the surrounding valleys. Earlier, the city was a centre of silk production; in the 1860s Louis Pasteur spent several years here studying the disease that was devastating silkworms. Above the centre stands the fort built under Vauban.
