‘Amrān lies on the northern highland plateau of Yemen, north of Sanaa, in a broad basin ringed by mountains. On a map the old town is a compact, dense cluster of narrow lanes and closely built houses. Newer districts extend around it in a looser, more regular layout, and the main road north from the capital runs past it.
The historic quarter is traditionally walled and built of stone and mud brick in the style of the Yemeni highlands, with tall houses pressed close together. The fields of the surrounding plain reach almost up to the edge of the town, and the mountains beyond close off the horizon.
