Anlu is a county-level city in Xiaogan, in eastern Hubei, where the hills of the north give way to the Jianghan plain. The Fu River flows through the area, and the city has grown along its banks. On the map, the older centre sits close to the water, while newer districts spread outward in broader, more regular blocks.
Anlu is widely known as a home of the ginkgo. Old ginkgo trees grow throughout the surrounding countryside, and the city is associated with them in regional identity. It is also connected with the Tang poet Li Bai, who lived in Anlu for about ten years after his marriage, a period often referred to in local history.
