Bathurst lies on the Macquarie River in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, west of the Blue Mountains. Its centre follows a clear grid of wide streets laid out in the colonial era, with parks and civic buildings set within it. The river curves along the town's eastern side, separating it from the open plains beyond.
Founded in 1815, Bathurst is often described as the oldest inland European settlement in Australia. It is also known well beyond the state for Mount Panorama, the hill circuit that hosts the Bathurst 1000 motor race each year. When not used for racing, the circuit is a public road.
