Bidar sits on a laterite plateau in the northeastern corner of Karnataka, close to the borders of Telangana and Maharashtra. On a map the old town appears as a dense, irregular core enclosed by the line of its historic walls, with the fort occupying the northern side where the plateau drops away. Beyond it, newer neighbourhoods and roads spread outward into farmland in a looser pattern.
In the fifteenth century Bidar became the capital of the Bahmani Sultanate, and later of the Barid Shahi dynasty. Monuments from that period still anchor the city, including the fort complex and the madrasa of Mahmud Gawan. Bidar is also known for bidriware, a metal craft of silver inlaid into a darkened alloy, which takes its name from the city.
