Bishop Auckland is a market town in County Durham, on high ground above the meeting of the River Wear and the River Gaunless. That setting shapes its map. The historic centre gathers around a broad Market Place on a ridge, and streets drop toward the rivers on either side. Beyond the castle, the open expanse of Auckland Park stretches away from the town.
For centuries Auckland Castle was a residence of the Prince Bishops of Durham, which gave the town its name and its standing. Newton Cap Viaduct
North of the centre, the former railway viaduct crosses the Wear valley on a line of stone arches. It now carries road traffic high above the river.
