Chatan Map Poster
Chatan runs along the East China Sea on the central west coast of Okinawa Island. Parts of Kadena Air Base and Camp Foster lie within its boundaries and take up much of its land. As a result, the town's streets are packed into a band along the shore and into pockets between fenced perimeters, which gives the map a very unusual balance of empty and dense areas.
The coastline has been heavily engineered. The Mihama district was built on reclaimed land and is home to American Village, a shopping and entertainment area known for its Ferris wheel. North of it, the Sunabe seawall runs beside the reef, a popular spot for divers and for watching the sunset. Breakwaters, marinas and straight promenades give the shore crisp geometric edges.

Sunabe seawall
A long concrete seawall follows the coast north of Mihama. On the map it is a firm, continuous line between the residential streets and the reef waters of the East China Sea.
Base boundaries
Large areas of military land appear as open spaces with only a few internal roads. Their long perimeters shape where the town's streets can run and give the poster its distinctive outline.
