Durham Map Poster & Print
Durham's layout is set by the River Wear, which bends in a deep, narrow loop around a steep rocky peninsula. The Norman cathedral and castle stand together on the high ground inside that loop. They were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, and from above the peninsula looks almost like an island.
Old bridges cross the river at several points around the loop, including Framwellgate Bridge and Elvet Bridge on the main routes into the centre and Prebends Bridge on the wooded riverbanks below the cathedral. The streets of the old town climb from these crossings up to the Market Place and on to Palace Green.
Durham University, founded in 1832, spreads across the city, with colleges on the peninsula and on the hill to the south. A railway viaduct strides across the west side. A Durham map poster shows one of the most recognisable town plans in England, a river loop with the city built inside it.

Framwellgate, Elvet and Prebends bridges cross the Wear around the loop. Each one links the peninsula to the rest of the city and draws a short line across the water.
University colleges
Durham's colleges are spread between the peninsula and the hillside to the south, so the university's buildings and grounds are part of the texture of the map.
