Fengling is a town in the northeast of Chongqing municipality, in the steep, heavily folded country north of the Yangtze near the Three Gorges region. The terrain is mountainous, and settlements are placed where valleys widen enough to allow them. From above, the town appears as a small, elongated cluster of buildings following the line of a valley and its road.
Around Fengling, the land rises steeply into ridges covered with forest and small terraced fields. Roads wind for long distances to connect the town with its neighbours, doubling back on themselves as they climb. Streams run through the valley floors, gathering toward larger rivers that eventually reach the Yangtze.
