Fort Beaufort lies in the Eastern Cape, on the Kat River near the foothills of the Amatola Mountains. The town began in 1837 as a military post during the frontier wars, and on the map its centre still reflects that origin: a small, regular grid set on land enclosed by a bend of the river.
One of its best-known structures is a Martello tower, a round fortification of a type usually built on coastlines, which makes this inland example unusual. The town is also close to Alice, home of the University of Fort Hare, and serves as a centre for farming areas known for citrus.
