Homburg is a town in the east of Saarland, not far from the border with Rhineland-Palatinate. Its centre gathers around the Schlossberg, a hill that once carried a fortress, and from above the old streets curve around the base of the slope. Beyond them, newer districts, rail lines and main roads spread out across the surrounding valleys.
The town is well known in Germany for the medical faculty and university hospital of Saarland University, whose large campus forms a distinct area of its own on the map. Under the Schlossberg lie extensive sandstone caves, dug over several centuries, which are among the largest of their kind in Europe. Homburg is also home to the Karlsberg brewery.
