Kent lies in Portage County in northeast Ohio, on the Cuyahoga River. On a map, the river runs through the middle of town in a narrow valley, crossed by a few bridges. The small downtown sits beside it, with a grid of short streets. Residential neighbourhoods spread out on either side, in the tree-lined blocks typical of Ohio towns.
East of downtown is the large campus of Kent State University, which dominates the town's shape.
