Longmen is a town in the northeastern part of Chongqing municipality, in the rolling hill country that covers much of this region. The land is almost never flat. Streets and buildings settle into valley floors and along the lower slopes, and the surrounding hillsides are cut into terraced fields. On a map the town looks compact and slightly elongated, shaped by the ground it sits on.
Roads here rarely run straight. They follow contours, bend around ridges and drop into valleys, so the connections to neighbouring towns look like looping, uneven lines.
