Mandalī lies in Diyala province in eastern Iraq, close to the border with Iran, where the Mesopotamian plain begins to rise toward the Zagros foothills. The town centre is compact. From above, it is surrounded by orchards and date palm groves divided by irrigation channels.
Water has always shaped the town. Its gardens depend on seasonal streams and canals coming off the hills, and periods of drought have hit the orchards hard. The border location has also given Mandalī a long role in trade and movement between the two countries.
