Osakasayama, usually called Sayama, is a small city in southern Osaka Prefecture. On the map, its most striking feature sits right in the middle: Sayama-ike, a large irrigation pond built more than 1,400 years ago and mentioned in Japan's earliest written chronicles. Residential streets and small parks surround it on all sides.
The pond has been rebuilt and reinforced many times over the centuries, and today it is lined with a walking path and cherry trees. On its edge stands the Osaka Prefectural Sayamaike Museum, designed by Tadao Ando, which tells the story of the reservoir and of irrigation in the region.
A Sayama map poster is centred on water in an unusual way. Instead of a river or a coastline, the focus is a broad, rounded pond, with the town's dense grid of houses and small streets pressing in around it. The rail lines running north toward Osaka add a few straight strokes to the composition.
