The railway line
The Dakar–Niger railway crosses the town on a long straight alignment. It is one of the few truly continuous lines on the map and the reason the settlement grew here in the first place.

Kaarta
Tambacounda lies in eastern Senegal, far from the Atlantic coast, on a wide, flat stretch of savanna that stays dry for much of the year. On a map the town shows up as a compact grid of streets surrounded by open country, its edges softening into scattered compounds, tracks and fields. There is no river or coastline to shape it, so its form comes almost entirely from roads and rail.
The town grew as a stop on the Dakar–Niger railway, the colonial-era line built to link the coast with the interior of West Africa, and the tracks still cut clearly across the plan. Major roads leave Tambacounda in several directions: west toward Dakar, east toward Mali, and south-east toward Niokolo-Koba National Park and Kédougou. That makes the town a natural gateway for travellers heading into the far south-east of the country.
A Tambacounda map poster captures that sense of a meeting point. The straight line of the railway, the roads reaching outward and the regular blocks between them form a spare, geometric composition. The empty land around the town becomes part of the design rather than a gap to fill, and in the high-contrast styles the result is striking in its simplicity.
The Dakar–Niger railway crosses the town on a long straight alignment. It is one of the few truly continuous lines on the map and the reason the settlement grew here in the first place.
National roads leave toward the west, the Malian border and the south-east, drawing long spokes that reach from the compact centre far out into the surrounding savanna.
To the south-east lies Niokolo-Koba National Park, a UNESCO-listed reserve, and Tambacounda is the usual base for journeys toward it and onward to Kédougou.
