Canal lines
Straight canals cross the district between the blocks, with small bridges at regular intervals, and on a Blueprint print they read like technical drawing lines.

Kaarta
Tōyō sits in Kōtō ward, on the low, flat land east of the Sumida River that was reclaimed from Tokyo Bay over the centuries. The map reflects that origin: streets run in a largely regular grid, and canals cut straight lines through the blocks. It's a working and residential district, and the street pattern is dense and even, with few of the winding lanes found in older parts of the city.
The canals are the key to reading the map. They were once used for moving timber and goods, and they still form clear bands of water running between neighbourhoods, crossed by many small bridges. Tōyōchō station on the Tōzai line lies near the centre, and the main roads meet around it. Further south, the land continues toward the bay and more reclaimed islands.
A Tōyō map poster shows a side of Tokyo that visitors seldom see but many residents know well: the tidy, watery east of the city, with its grid of streets and canals. The linework is rich and fine-grained, and the canals give it structure. It suits anyone who has lived, worked or commuted here.
Straight canals cross the district between the blocks, with small bridges at regular intervals, and on a Blueprint print they read like technical drawing lines.
Built on flat land taken from the bay, the area has a largely regular street pattern that looks orderly and dense compared with Tokyo's older hilly districts.
Main roads converge near Tōyōchō station on the Tōzai line, forming a clear centre in an otherwise evenly spread neighbourhood.

Tokyo is too large for most people to know as a whole, but they know their own neighbourhood very closely. A map of Tōyō's canals and streets is a personal portrait of a first apartment, a workplace or a daily commute.
