Tuusula lies in Uusimaa, north of Helsinki, and its geography centres on Lake Tuusula, a long, narrow lake running north to south. The municipality is made up of several distinct centres, including Hyrylä, Jokela and Kellokoski, separated by forest and farmland. On the map, they appear as separate clusters linked by roads.
The lake's eastern shore is known for the artists' community that formed there around 1900. Painters, writers and composers built homes along the lakeside road, including the painter Pekka Halonen, whose home Halosenniemi is now a museum, and Jean Sibelius, whose home Ainola lies just to the north.
