Whangarei Map Poster & Print
Whangarei is the only city in Northland, and water shapes it. The Hatea River flows south through the city to the Town Basin, a marina and waterfront at the head of Whangarei Harbour. From there the harbour stretches southeast for many kilometres toward its entrance, guarded by the volcanic peaks of Whangarei Heads.
Mount Parihaka rises directly behind the city centre, a forested hill with a lookout over the whole city. Suburbs wrap around it and spread up the surrounding valleys, and roads follow the natural lines of the land. North of the centre, the Hatea drops over Whangarei Falls, a much-visited waterfall set in a local park.
