Zhonggulou is an urban subdistrict of Wanzhou, in the northeastern part of Chongqing municipality, on the banks of the Yangtze. Here the river runs wide and slow, a result of the Three Gorges Dam downstream, which raised water levels along this stretch and reshaped the waterfront of the whole city.
From above, the area shows the typical logic of a hillside Chinese river city. Streets rarely run straight for long; they follow contours, curve around ridges and climb from the water toward higher ground. Dense blocks of apartments sit on terraces, and roads and bridges link the neighbourhood to the rest of Wanzhou across valleys and water.
