Abingdon-on-Thames lies in Oxfordshire, a few miles south of Oxford, on a bend of the River Thames where the smaller River Ock flows in. On a map the historic centre sits close to the water, with streets radiating from the market place and a medieval bridge carrying the road across the Thames toward the south.
The old town is compact and irregular, a pattern formed over centuries around the abbey and the market. The seventeenth-century County Hall, raised on arches above the market place, remains the central landmark. Beyond the centre, twentieth-century housing estates spread in curving roads and cul-de-sacs toward the ring of main roads around the town.
Abingdon claims to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in England, and it grew up around a powerful Benedictine abbey. For much of the twentieth century it was also home to the MG car factory. An Abingdon map poster shows the river, the old core and the later town in a single balanced view.
