Anegada Map Poster
Anegada is the odd one out in the British Virgin Islands. Where its neighbours are steep and volcanic, Anegada is a low slab of coral and limestone, barely rising above sea level at its highest point. Its Spanish name is usually translated as drowned land, and from a boat it can be hard to see until you are close. On a map it forms a long, gently curved strip.
The western half is taken up by a network of salt ponds, irregular shallow lagoons that give the interior a scattered, cellular pattern, and flamingos have been reintroduced there. Roads are few and sandy, connecting The Settlement, the island's main village, with beaches along the north shore. Most of the map's detail lies in water rather than on land.
Offshore, Horseshoe Reef stretches away to the southeast and is one of the largest barrier reefs in the Caribbean. It has caught hundreds of ships over the centuries, making the waters around Anegada a known wreck site.
