Esseillon forts
The forts stand in a line along the rocky edge below the village. On the map they form a string of solid shapes overlooking the Arc and the old route through the valley.

Aussois Map Poster & Print
Aussois sits on a high, sunny terrace above the valley of the Arc in the Haute-Maurienne, Savoie. From above, the village is a compact cluster of stone houses around its church, surrounded by fields on the gently sloping plateau. Below, the ground drops steeply toward the Arc. Above, the slopes rise toward the Vanoise National Park.
Just below the village stand the Esseillon forts, a chain of nineteenth-century fortifications built by the Kingdom of Sardinia to guard the route to Italy. Higher up, the Plan d'Amont and Plan d'Aval reservoirs feed hydroelectric plants. The village is a starting point for walks into the national park and for its well-known via ferrata routes.
An Aussois map poster shows a village whose position matters as much as its streets. The plateau lets the houses spread into a rounded shape, which is unusual in a mountain valley. The forts line the edge of the drop, the road bends up from the Arc, and pistes and tracks lead toward the high ground beyond.

The plateau
Aussois spreads across a broad terrace, so the map shows a rounded village surrounded by fields. That shape is rare in a region of narrow valleys.
High reservoirs
Above the village, the Plan d'Amont and Plan d'Aval lakes appear as sharp shapes of water held back by dams, in the mountains near the Vanoise.

Aussois Map Poster & Print — FAQ
