Banbridge grew up where the old road from Belfast to Dublin crossed the River Bann in County Down, and the town still follows that crossing. The river curves along the lower edge of the centre, and the main street climbs steeply away from it, with newer housing spreading over the surrounding drumlin country.
Its best-known feature is the Cut. In the 1830s the steep main street was lowered through the hilltop so that horse-drawn coaches could manage the climb, and a bridge was built over the gap to carry the cross street. It remains one of the more unusual street layouts in Ireland, and on a map it shows as a sharp division running through the heart of town.
A Banbridge map poster also takes in the linen heritage of the Bann valley, where mills once lined the river. In Church Square stands a memorial to Captain Francis Crozier, the Arctic explorer born in the town, who was lost on the Franklin expedition.
