Bayramaly Map Poster & Print
Bayramaly sits in the Murghab oasis in southeastern Turkmenistan, at the edge of the Karakum Desert. The land around it is kept green by irrigation, and on a map the town is surrounded by a patchwork of fields and a network of canals and channels. The streets follow a mostly regular plan, with the railway and main roads passing through.
Just outside the town lie the remains of ancient Merv, one of the great cities of the Silk Road and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its ruins spread over a huge area, with the outlines of several successive walled cities, including the square fortress of Gyaur Kala and the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar. On a map these walls appear as large geometric shapes in the open land.
A Bayramaly map poster combines a modern town and an ancient landscape. The town grid, the lines of irrigation canals, and the enormous enclosures of Merv together create a composition unlike any other, a record of settlement in the oasis over more than two thousand years.

Irrigation network
Canals and channels carry water from the Murghab across the oasis. They divide the fields into a fine, regular pattern around the town.
Desert edge
Beyond the irrigated land lies the Karakum. The contrast between the dense oasis and the empty desert defines the setting of the whole area.
