Dover sits where the valley of the small River Dour meets the English Channel, between high chalk cliffs on either side. From above, the town is squeezed into this valley, its streets running inland along the valley floor, while the cliffs and downs rise sharply to east and west. The harbour stretches along the seafront, enclosed by long breakwaters.
The town faces France across the narrowest part of the Channel, and its port has been a crossing point for centuries. Dover Castle occupies the heights above the eastern side of the town, one of the largest castles in England. The white cliffs that stretch along the coast are among the most recognisable landscapes in the country.
A Dover map poster captures this dramatic setting: the curved line of the harbour walls, the ferry terminals, the narrow valley town and the empty ground of the cliffs.
